This thesis addresses the Korean syllable structure within the framework of CV Phonology. The answers for the three basic questions are provided in this thesis : the first question of the syllable is "How does one define the syllable?". The second is "How does one determine syllable boundaries?". This first question is conceptually different from the second one. The third is " Is syllable the phonological unit?".
The goal of this thesis is to examine the Korean syllable structure in CV Phonology. To achieve the goal above, I, first of all, point out some problems of the Generative Phonology and that they do not concur on the syllable as phonological unit. Further, I, then, investigate the theories of Non-linear Phonology including Kahn (1976), Selkirk (1982), and Clements & Keyser (1983). On the basis of this, I deal with the structure of Korean syllable in CV Phonology. They have suggested three syllable templates for Korean so far ; one is CVC syllable template by the majority of Korean Phononologists, another is CCVC by Kim (1986) and the other is CVCCi by Park (1991). Here, I support CVCCi template, and discuss about why CVCCi is the best type for Korean.
