The purpose of this study is to develop a new building construction education by utilizing web multimedia and BIM technology to improve the existing building construction education. For this, the reason the problems arose with the existing education was deduced, the educational efficacy of web multimedia and BIM technology was analyzed, and the system process to update each information was suggested. The major results of this study can be summarized as follows.
(1) Deduction of Cause of Problems in Building Construction Education
Site work assignment table and documentation research were performed to deduce the major tasks of new recruits, and the OJT curriculum of 3 construction companies were examined to deduce the representative OJT education contents, and the curriculum of architectural engineering program of 4 colleges in Seoul were analyzed to deduce the representative college curriculum. As the result of comparison of deduced major task details and curriculum, lack of blueprint-related classes, inadequate link between classes, and lack of sense of realism were found to be the biggest problems.
(2) Analysis of Educational Functionality of Web Multimedia and BIM
Examining the major functions and education cases of web multimedia and BIM, the major functions of each technology are analyzed and the functions fit for building construction education were deducted. The deducted educational functions of BIM were found to be blueprint understanding and simulation through visualization and supply calculation and process information check through information integration functionality. In case of web multimedia, they were the confirmation of detailed work contents, movement of equipment and supplies, and reproduction of site atmosphere.
(3) Selection of Information Classification System and Suggestion of Storage Plan for Web Multimedia and BIM Information
As the result of examining for the information classification system appropriate for building education system, BIM information was best when utilizing EBS, and multimedia information was best when EBS+WBS was used. Also, capturing actual video clips and BIM modeling were performed to prepare for the storage plan of each information. The web multimedia information must be stored in WMV format, resolution of 720*480, and 24 fps, and BIM information was defined as storing divided into PDF and IFC format.
(4) Suggestion of System Process and Prototype Development
The overall information conveyance process of the system was suggested and the interface was set. Based on this, the prototype for slurry wall construction was implemented, and the result confirmed that web multimedia information, BIM information, and text information were provided smoothly.
The 'building construction education system utilizing web multimedia and BIM' developed in this study provides various inter-area integrated contents necessary for actual tasks which is believed to be able to reduce the gap between education and real tasks. There are limitations, however, in that the study on standard educational contents is inadequate, and the considerations on the acquisition plan of web multimedia and BIM information are inadequate. If the limitations of this study is improved and the supplementation and verification of the system are executed through consistent studies in the future, it is believed that it can greatly contribute to the development of building construction education and training human resources in construction industry.
