This study is designed to imagine Northeast Asia as a transnational horizon by developing philosophical and methodological fundamentals. The pivotal point is how we can overcome the limitations of our stereotyped thoughts about Northeast Asia. In this sense, Kant's concept of Einbildungskraft (synthetic power of imagination) is very heuristic. It draws our attention to our faculty of reproductive representation of an experienced object and our ability of productive representation of an object regardless of our experience. Thus, the ability of imagination, which is inherent in every human being, provides an epistemological basis for our imaging Northeast Asia as a transnational horizon. The imagination of Northeast Asia is possible in two ways: theoretical and practical. The former is related to the question of how we can know Northeast Asia from the individual, societal and international perspective, and the latter is related to the question of what we can hope or what we should do in the context of future community which might be called a Northeast Asian Community or a Northeast Asian Union. The core question in the practical imagination of Northeast Asia as a transnational horizon is how we can develop ideas of peace. The future regional community in Northeast Asia should be based on ideas of peace. It should correspond to the concept of Weltrepublik (Kant) and Sittlichkeit (Hegel). In this context, we should also consider the question of founding the constitition of liberty (Arendt) as a beginning of that community which makes a free action in plurality possible.
