국문 초록 (Abstract)

특정 전통 종교는 특정 문화 전통과 밀접한 연관을 맺고 있다. 본 고에서는 한국의 토착 종교와 가톨릭의 만남이 한국 근·현대 100년 속에서 지니는 종교·문화적인 의미를 천착한다. 특히 구한말에 있어서 전통문화와 가톨릭의 만남과 마주침, 접촉과 갈등을 극명하게 드러낸 일대 사건이었던 제주도 「신축교안」(1901)에 종교·사상적 배경으로 작용한 것으로 평가되면서, 최근 재조명되고 있는 『수신영약』(修身靈藥, 1900)에 중점을 두고 연구한다.
제주도에 부임한 초창기 가톨릭 성직자들 중에서 유일한 한국인이었던 김원영(아우구스티노, 1869~1936) 신부는 제주도 현지의 토착 종교 및 민간 신앙이 선교의 가장 큰 장애물이라고 판단하였다. 그리하여 그가 저술한 『수신영약』은 제주도 토착 종교 및 민간 신앙의 현상들을 비교적 상세하게 다룬 후, 이에 대하여 조목조목 비판하면서 가톨릭의 교리가 올바름을 내세우는 형식으로 이루어져 있다.
구한말 가톨릭과 토착 종교의 만남과 마주침을 과제로 하는 본 고의 연구 방법은 먼저 김원영 신부의 『수신영약』을 저본으로 삼는다. 그 안에 들어 있는 핵심적 요소를 가톨릭의 사상과 문화적 요소와 비교하는 작업인 종교현상학적인 연구와 해석을 시도하였다. 그리하여 대전환기였던 구한말 한국 사회에서 벌어졌던 종교간의 만남과 갈등이 보여주었던 실상이 오늘 우리에게 주는 의미를 다시 찾아보았다. 본 고는 이러한 시기에 특히 문화 계승의 중요한 장으로서 종교의 위상과 의미를 재인식하는 작업의 일환이었다. 이러한 의미에서 종교간의 만남과 협력의 가능성을 천착하는 작업은 매우 중요하다고 여겨진다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A certain religion has close relation with a certain cultural tradition. In this article I would like to dig out the religio-cultural meaning of the encounter and crash between Korean indigenous religion and catholicism in Korean modern time. Especially in the beginning of the 20th century, in the island of Quelpaert(Jejudo, 濟州道), there was a representative Anti-Christian Movement, so-called sinchuk-gyoan(辛丑敎案, 1901). A newly found manuscript written by a Korean catholic priest is estimated as ideological incentive of the mass revolt. The above mentioned manuscript is susinyeongyak((修身靈藥, 1900) by Augustine Kim Won-yeong(金元永, 1869-1936).
Augustine Kim Won-yeong was the only one Korean among the missionaries sent to Jeju in the beginning of the Church history of the island. He judged that the indigenous religion and folk-belief of Jeju island were the main obstacle against the catholic mission. As the result of such judgement he wrote the susinyeongyak.
First of all, in this manuscript, he dealt with the indigenous religion and folk-belief of Jeju island relatively in detail. And then he criticized these phenomena from item to item. In this way he tried to insist that catholic teaching is the only path to the truth. Augustine Kim Won-yeong was a clergy well-educated but at the same time clearly limited in the "Zeitgeist."
So I tried to analyze this susinyeongyak in this article. Because the purpose of the article is the interpretation/hermeneutics of the encounter between indigenous religion and catholicism in the beginning of the 20th century. At first, I tried to do phenomenological research about the core factors in the manuscript. I. e. the central catholic thought melted in the manuscript is compared with the traditional culture of the common people in the Jeju island. And then I tired to find out again the meaning of inter-religious encounter and conflict in the time of enormous transition, 100 years ago, for us contemporary people.
