    The object of this research is to determine the effect of the walk activity on young children's self-conception, emotional intelligence and scientific investigation ability. The investigational questions and study hypotheses are as follows.
    Investigational question
    1) Does the walk activity have a positive effect on young children's self-conception?
    2) Does the walk activity have a positive effect on young children's emotional intelligence?
    3) Does the walk activity have a positive effect on young children's scientific investigation ability?
    Study hypotheses
    1. The walk activity has a positive effect on young children's self-conception.
    2. The walk activity has a positive effect on young children's emotional intelligence.
    3. The walk activity has a positive effect on young children's scientific investigation ability.
    The participants of this study were 55 preschool children (28 in treatment group and 27 in comparison group)at the age of 3 enrolled in W kindergarten located in Jeon-Ju. From the preliminary test, there was no statistical difference between treatment and comparison group in self-conception, emotional intelligence and scientific investigation ability scores. This showed that two groups have the same baseline characteristics.
    This test was administered to young children 9 times for 3 weeks, which was average 3 times per week. The children in treatment group were participated in the walk activities based on the subjects in afternoon select-free activity classes at Dotori park which is near the kindergarten.
    The children in comparison group were not participated in the walk activities but were taught by instruments of education.
    "The assessment of self-conception in early childhood" method from Jung Suk Ja(1984) was used in pre and post tests to measure the self-conception. This assessment is categorized in 3 sub-assessments, which test self-image, behavior in the kindergarten and behavior in the peer group.
    Emotional intelligence checklist from Lee Byeong Rae(1997) was used in pre and post tests to measure the emotional intelligence. This checklist measures the abilities of self-conception, self-control, conception of others and control of others.
    Investigation ability measurement from Jung Jung Ae(1996) was used in pre and post tests to measure the scientific investigation ability.
    To test the difference in test scores between two groups, t-test was performed using SPSS 12.0.
    The results are as follows.
    First, the self-conception test score was significantly increased compared to the pre test score in the group of young children who had been participated in the walk activities. In the sub-assessment, self image score was increased but there were no differences in behavior in the kindergarten and behavior in the peer group.
    Second, emotional intelligence test showed that there were significant increases in self-conception, self-control, conception of others and control of others in treatment group.
    Third, scientific investigation ability test score was significantly increased compared to the pre test score in the group of young children with walk activities. This result showed that the scientific investigation ability was improved in the treatment group.
    This research showed that the walk activity had a positive effect on young children's self-conception, emotional intelligence and scientific investigation ability. Therefore it suggested that the walk activity can be an effective teaching method.
