This study examined how English and Korean word stress have been studied, in particular about the rules for the positions of stress, and what their rules' and theories' limits, as well as advantages, are. In addition, this study suggests the possibility for the relations between English and Korean stress.Earlier studies of English word stress are phonological and descriptive, while there is a lack of studies in respect to phonetics and education. Therefore, it is necessary that we not only study word stress from theviewpoint of phonetics and acoustics, but also examine the effects on the native language's stress system in the production of English words, considering that a Korean word generally has the primary stress on the first syllable if one accepts the presence of stress in the Korean language.
