The purpose of this study was to examine the posttraumatic growth of the children from divorced families. The study focused on the trauma from the process of parental divorce and potential positive outcomes appearing on the individual.
Participants were 20 to 30 years old young adults who have divorced parents. Fifteen participants did in-depth interview about the process of posttraumatic growth. The data were analyzed using the ground theory by Strauss and Corbin (1998). The results showed that people could find their strengths and grow through the crisis.
Posttraumatic “growth” means positive and new outcomes which surpass personal standard of a trauma in earlier. Several studies about the factors affecting a posttraumatic growth showed that cognition process of a trauma event, personal pain levels of trauma, religion and spirituality, social support elements are related to posttraumatic growth.
The current study also suggests that the posttraumatic growth could come out from a cognition process change about a trauma event, religious factor, individual internal factors, and family relationship change. The result of this study can be implied in developing a theory about posttraumatic growth of divorced families’ children and in providing a direction to social work pract
