이머시브 연극《버닝필드》의 뉴다큐멘터리 전략과 관객 경험 구조 = New Documentary Strategies and Audience Experience Structure in the Immersive Theater《The Burning Field》

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 이머시브 연극 《버닝필드》를 사례로, 뉴다큐멘터리 연극의 전략 과 감각 구조가 어떻게 현실과 허구를 교차시키며 관객 경험을 재구성하는지를 분석한다. 연구자는 본 공연의 기획·아카이빙·자료 분석 등 프리 프로덕션 단계 부터 2025년 오연에 이르기까지 전 과정에 PD로 참여한 경험을 바탕으로, 현장 자료와 제작 과정에서의 기록을 일차 자료로 활용하였다. 이를 통해 《버닝필 드》가 재현을 넘어 현실 사건의 감각적·윤리적 체험을 창출하는 과정을 구체적 으로 규명하고자 했다. 분석은 감각 환경으로서의 공연이 경험 조건을 재구성하 는 방식, 감각-인지-윤리의 연쇄 속에서 관객이 의미를 구성하는 과정, 수행적 주체로서 관객이 형성되는 경로를 중심으로 진행되었다. 연구 결과, 《버닝필 드》는 다감각적 구조와 비대칭적 정보 배치를 통해 몰입과 거리두기가 병치되 는 공간을 창출하였으며, 이는 관객이 단순한 목격자가 아닌 응답과 판단을 수행 하는 주체로 전환되는 계기를 마련하였다. 본 연구는 이머시브 연극과 뉴다큐멘 터리 연극의 결합이 관객의 주체성과 윤리적 실천을 촉발할 수 있는 미학적 가능 성을 제시하며, 향후 공연예술학에서 감각 구조와 관객 수행성 연구의 확장 가능 성을 시사한다.

This study analyzes how the strategies and sensory structures of new documentary theatre intersect reality and fiction to reconfigure audience experience, focusing on the immersive theatre production 《The Burning Field》. Drawing on the author’s direct involvement as producer in the entire process—from pre-production, including documentary collection, archiving, and analysis, to the 2025 fifth run—this research employs first-hand materials and production records as primary sources. The analysis examines: (1) how the performance reconstructs the conditions of experience as a sensory environment; (2) how audiences construct meaning through the sequence of sensation, cognition, and ethics; and (3) the process by which audiences become performative subjects. Findings reveal that 《The Burning Field》 employs multi-sensory structures and asymmetric information to create a space where immersion and critical distance coexist, enabling audiences to shift from mere witnesses to active agents of response and judgment. This study proposes that the integration of immersive theatre and new documentary theatre holds aesthetic potential to activate audience subjectivity and ethical practice, offering implications for future research on sensory structures and audience performativity in performance studies.
