Focusing on independent documentary films dealing with 'Yongsan tenants' struggle' produced after the tragic accidents on January 20th, 2009, this study discusses the politics of place-making, which include re/building community. Documentary films, especially independent ones, deliver important moments of reflection in regards to remembering history. They concern themselves with the relation between representer and represented, and question intensively and profoundly the im/possibility and the way (if possible) of remembering or documenting. In the case of Yongsan-related documentary films, we observe these characteristics more evident and varied.
In this study, documentary storytelling (aesthetics) and struggle for place (political philosophy) are the two axes of analysis. Using globalization as a metaphor, 'space' refers to the overarching structure of political economy with transnational capital and elite nomads in the center, while 'place' refers to the locale/s which/who are confronted with the effects of globalization. Thereby, place is often essentialized and feminized. This study pays attention to the implication of a gendered viewpoint in documentary films about Yongsan, and reviews possibilities of place-making that is not trapped in essentialization.
