The purpose of this study which targeted on the university students was to examine into the effect of an attitude for death and suicide, making them hold communion with themselves on life and death through this program for the death preparation education.
The subjects of this study were the students who are in college located in Pusan, understood the purpose of this study and approved to participate in this questionnaire. They were chosen and divided into 14 experimental group and 14 control group.
3 nursing science professors who participated in the hospice education program and 1 psychology science professor investigated on change of an attitude for death and suicide after carrying into effect this program for the death preparation education. This program was made with lectures and discussions for 5 days, 6 hours a day. It consisted with totally 30 hours including the meaning of death, modern society and death, hospice movements and desirable life and death.
The data were collected from January 26 to 31 in 2004 for the control group and from February 9 to 13 in 2004 for the experimental group.
The measurement instrument of an attitude for death was used 4 point scale for 25 questionnaire which was reconstituted by Hyun-Suk, Nam(1999). The questionnaire, considering modern Korean society, was based on the FODS(Fear of Death Scale) which was made by Collett & Lester(1969). The measurement instrument of an attitude for suicide was used 3 point scale for 19 questionnaire which was transformed into self - report questionnaire by Min-Sub, Sin(1990). It was based on the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire which was made by Beck(1987).
Using SPSS PC 10.0 Win Program, the general characteristic of subjects was analyzed into frequency and percentage. The general characteristic of experimental and control groups, and the same quality and hypothesis examination for the dependent variable were analyzed into χ^(2)-test and independent t-test.
The results of the study were as follows ;
The first hypothesis, "The students who participated in the death - preparation education program will be shown a lower grade of an attitude for death than the students who didn't" was supported(t=-4.479, p=.000).
The second hypothesis, "The students who participated in the death - preparation education program will be shown a lower grade of an attitude for suicide than the students who didn't" was rejected(t=-.035, p=.972).
On the basis of results from this study, I would make suggestions as follows ;
1.It is need of continuance study which develops the death preparation education program as an age bracket and examines the effect of this.
2.It is need of qualitative study for the high level data of this program.
3.It is need of investigative study which searches for the relation between the death preparation education program and suicide.
4.It is need of cultivating the experts who specialize in death education. For this, I would like to suggest that it needs to be made teams, consisting with the experts in the fields of nursing science, medical science, law, pedagogy, social business, religion and etc.
key words : Death Preparation Education Program, Attitude for Death and Suicide.
