This is an exploratory study in which the purpose was to obtain information from students, teachers, and professors on the current curriculum of the universities of education. Surveys consisted of 10 dimensions of curriculum(sample characteristics, teacher image, problems of current curriculum, composition of curriculum, lectures and evaluation, liberal education, professional education, subject teaching and extracurricular activities, area of concentration, and student teaching and thesis) were made and distributed. Subjects participated in this study are 203 professors from 11 universities of education, 270 elementary school teachers in Kwangju and Jeonnam provinces, and 632 students at Kwangju National University of Education.
Two research questions guided the study: "What are the major problems in the curriculum of the universities of education?" and "What should be changed to solve the problems? The results of the study indicate that three major problems of the current curriculum are ① irregular implementation of curriculum due to the national teacher appointment process, ② the excessive required credit hours to graduate, and ③ the insufficient enrichment of pedagogy and incompetent teachers for fully responsible for subject matter. Other findings are provided. The study suggests six major changes in order to improve the curriculum for the universities of education. Those are: ① paradigm shift in purposes, contents, methods, and evaluations of curriculum, ② emphasis of quality rather than quantity in teacher education process, ③ provision of students with various courses to select, ④ connection with elementary school curriculum, ⑤ consolidation of educational laws, rule, and regulations, and ⑥ preparation for accepting changes.
