실험영화 시간구조의 미학과 이데올로기 = The Aesthetics and Ideology of the Experimental Film's Time Structure

The time structure of experimental film is closely related to the Eastern time notions of cyclical rhythm, periodicity, randomness, and simultaneity. To prove this, I examine the time structure of experimental film in the outermost extremes of a time experiment and investigate both Eastern and Western time notions to distinguish them from ancient notions. In addition, I research the relationship between the time notions of Western avant-garde filmmakers, concentrating on the material itself, and the Eastern time spirit, focusing on time itself, through structural films as well as found-footage films. The distinctiveness of this paper is in how it reviews the research on time in experimental films from an extended angle as opposed to using the existing aesthetic approach, borrowing the time study methods of social science research. To achieve the goals of this study, I research the politics behind studies of the experimental film genre, using the time notion difference between mainstream commercial films and experimental films as a conflict counterpart. In a nutshell, this study argues that experimental films born of Western modernism are in fact very oriental. Both the found-footage works and the structural film works match the notion of Eastern time, in which the material and spirit work in perfect harmony, with Yin and Yang continuously maintaining a balance by alternating and circulating. This is precisely the point where the diachronic experimental spirit of avant-garde filmmakers is revealed. Also in this study, I explore the social scientific meaning of the experimental film genre as a sign of the cultural and social times while also examining the time structure with reference to mainstream movies through discussions by many social scientists. I also examine the subversive time ideological strategy of the experimental film genre, which refuses the 'Habitus'.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

구조주의 실험영화의 시간구조는 순환적 시간관과 리듬감, 주기성, 우연성 그리고 동시성 등으로 표현되는 동양적 시간관과 대단히 유사하다 이를 증명하기 위해 본 논문에서는 먼저 고대로부터의 동, 서양 구별되는 시간관을 검토해보고 시간실험의 최극단에 있는 실험영화의 시간구조 유형을 파악해보았다. 영화의 물질성을 특히나 강조했던 구조영화와 파운드푸티지 작업에서 이와 정반대의 정신 중심의 동양적 시간관이 도출된다는 것을 통해 아방가르드 영화인들의 영화 물질성과 고대부터의 동양적 시간정신의 교섭관계를 탐구했다. 또한 실험영화의 시간연구를 사회과학적 연구방법론들을 차용해 기존 미학적 접근에서 보다 확장된 시선으로 검토했다. 주류 상업영화의 시간구조와의 차이점과 갈등관계 그리고 지속적으로 생성 변모되고 있는 실험영화 장르연구의 시작으로써 실험영화 시간구조의 정치학을 고찰하려는 시도였다. 본 연구는 서구 모더니즘의 산물인 실험영화가 실제로 대단히 동양적인 영화라고 주장한다. 구조영화와 파운드푸티지 작품들의 시간구조 분석에서 물질과 정신의 완벽한 조화, 음양의 평형과 순환 그리고 리듬을 중요시하는 동양적 시간관을 추출해낼 수 있기 때문이다. 아울러 시간기호로서 실험영화의 사회과학적인 의미와 주류 영화에 대항하는 시간구조를 여러 사회과학자들의 논의를 통해 탐구해 봄으로써 오늘날 영화라는 단단한 아비투스의 장을 거부하는 실험영화 장르의 전복적 시간 이데올로기 전략을 살펴보았다.
