The development of service or tertiary industry is one of the dominant characteristics of the modern capitalism, and there have been very diverse perspectives upon the meaning of this phenomenon. This study is to check up those diverse perspectives systematically and to study on what connection does the tertiarization of the Korean economy have within the employment structure of female labor forces in the Korean economy.
Through this study, we have found that the female workers are concentrated on the sales and service work places, which is characterized as non-skilled, low-waged and unstable employment, and their work conditions, i. e. , wage, working hour, etc., are not improved comparing with those of male workers. However, the female labors, employed in the service industry, have exercised a very important role of overcoming the economic stagnation in accordance with the recession-proof hypothesis. We, in this study, have confirmed the key role of the female workers based upon the statistical analysis.
