『주자어류(朱子語類)-독서법(讀書法)』에 나타난 독서의 의미와 방법 = Meaning and Methods for Reading appeared in the Zhu xi Analects-"Reading"

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글에서는 주자 독서론의 시대적 배경을 중심으로 주자가 생각하는 독서의 의미, 독서를 위한 마음가짐, 독서의 방법과 단계를 살펴보았다. 시대적 부조리의 원인을 학문적 혼란에서 찾은 주자는 시대 상황을 극복하기 위해 바람직한 학문의 확립에 주력했고, 그 구체적인 방법론으로 독서에 대한 체계적인 이론을 정립하게 되었다.
주자는 독서를 올바른 인간의 도리가 무엇인지 알아나가는 과정으로 보았다. 그는 인격적 모범을 보인 성현의 말씀이 담겨있는 책을 통해 어떻게 살아야 하는가에 대한 해답을 얻는 것이 독서의 진정한 가치라고 믿었다. 주자가 가장 중시한 책이 '경전(經傳)'이었고, 책을 읽을 때 마음가짐을 중시했다는 사실은 모두 그의 성인지향적인 독서의 성향을 보여주고 있다고 할 수 있다.
주자의 독서론을 통해 얻을 수 있는 시사점은 세 가지이다.
첫째, '독서의 가치'를 높이 평가했다는 것이다.
둘째, 독서의 과정에서 심리적 기재를 중시했다는 것이다. 존심(存心), 허심(虛心) 그리고 평심(平心)과 관심(寬心)은 주자가 강조한 독서를 위한 마음가짐이다.
셋째, 책의 내용에 따라 주안점과 읽는 방법을 달리하고 있다는 것이다.
주자는 당시의 사회적 문제를 해결하기 위한 대안으로 '내면화를 통해 실천하는 독서'를 제안했다. 올바른 독서가 개인을 변화시키고 나아가 왜곡된 사회를 바로잡을 수 있을 것이라고 믿었던 주자의 독서에 대한 담론은 '전통적 독서'의 가치를 다시 생각하며, 나아가 실천적인 독서 문화의 새로운 목표와 방법의 필요성을 제기하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper, focusing on the background of the times underlying the Reading-Theory of Zhu Xi, deals with what Zhu Xi thought the meaning of reading, the mental attitudes for reading, and the methods and stages of reading are.
Considering that absurdities at those days were derived from academic chaos, Zhu Xi endeavored to establish desirable learning, and then developed a systematic theory of reading through his specific methodology.
Zhu Xi regarded reading as a process of finding out what moral sense a human being should have.
He believed that the true value of reading lies in finding the key to how to live through books with words of the wise who showed exemplary characters.
The fact that Zhu Xi's most precious book was 「the Classical Canon」 and that he put a great value on the mental attitude when reading, showed that he had a tendency toward scholar-oriented reading.
Zhu Xi's Reading Theory offers three implications as follows.
First, Zhu Xi placed a high value on the worth of reading.
Second, he attached great importance to mental component in the process of reading.
Third, he varied leading points and reading methods, depending on the contents of books.
He suggested, as an answer to solve the social problems of the days, reading into practice through internalization.
Zhu Xi's discourse on reading that correct reading makes an individual changed and further the distorted society straightened raises the necessity to reconsider the value of traditional reading and, further to establish new aims and methods of practical reading culture.
