지속가능성의 윤리와 생태체계의 가치

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 지속가능성의 윤리를 생태체계의 가치와 결부시켜 논의한다. 먼저 지속가능성을 자연 자본을 중심 축으로 인간·사회·경제 자본을 연결고리로 삼아 개념규정하는 시도는 의미가 분명해진다는 장점에도 불구하고 기능적 의미만 지나치게 강조하는 문제가 불거진다. 그 결과 인간가치와 생태가치의 대결에서 전자의 손을 일방적으로 들어주는 인간중심적 편향을 드러낸다. 이에 생태체계의 주요 기능에 준거하여 지속가능성을 세 가지-생명의학적·물질적·미학적-차원으로 나누고 그 특성을 살펴본다. 생명의학적 지속가능성은 그것의 물리적 의미를, 미학적 지속가능성은 그것의 역사적 의미를 복원시켜 주는 강점을 지니며, 둘 다 인간가치와 생태가치를 경쟁 속에서의 조화로 의미 있게 수렴하고 있다. 또한 지속가능성의 원리를 규범명제로 정리해 본 결과, 역시 인간중심적 주장과 생태중심적 주장이 미묘한 갈등을 자아내면서 교차되는 것으로 밝혀진다. 지금까지의 논의를 숙고해 보면, 지속가능성에서 생태체계의 가치가 어떻게 작동하느냐가 주요 관건으로 나타난다. 그것을 경제적 가치와 생태체계 서비스의 관계로 해명해 본다. 직접적 사용가치는 공급/문화 서비스를, 간접적 사용가치는 조절 서비스를, 실존적 가치는 문화 서비스를, 선택권 가치는 세 서비스 모두의 가치를 향유하는 것으로 파악된다. 발전윤리가 지속가능성 윤리의 출발점이다. 그러나 그것은 경직된 인간중심주의의 전제를 탈피하지 못함으로써 답보하고 만다. 최근 환경윤리의 동향은 유연한 인간중심주의를 넘어서서 생태중심주의로 과감하게 진입하는 추세에 있다. 지속가능성의 윤리를 성공적으로 정립하기 위해선, 생태중심주의의 논변을 치밀하게 정교화하는 것도 중요하지만 생태체계의 서비스와 가치를 적절하게 처리하는 전략이 더욱 긴요하다고 보고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this thesis is to make a ethical study on the relations between sustainability and ecosystem’s value. First of all, I analysis the concept of sustainability in connection with human·social·economic·natural capital. Sustainability can be divided into four degrees- week, intermediate, strong, and absurdly strong-depending on how much substitution one thinks there is among types of capital. I may distinguish between three spheres of sustainability according to three 'natural functions' of the environnment. Biomedical·material·aesthetic sustain-ability are explained by four attributes, namely, moral claim, value orientation, validity type, social institutions. And principles of sustainability are divided into two kinds, namely anthropocentric ethical principles and ecocentric ethical principles. Ecosystems and the services they provide(provisioning, regulating, cultural and supporting) have value to human societies because people derive utility from their use, either directly or indirectly (use values). People also hold value for ecosystem services that they are not currently using (non-use values).In conclusion, toward a new ecocentric environmental ethics, we seek an ethical basis for sustainability- a theoretical framework that can serve as a means of resolving the conceptual·principle’s tension between human values and ecological values. Especially, the concepts of ecosystem value and valuation approaches are required.
