시각예술을 통한 사적 기억과 장소성의 기념비화 연구 : －본인 작품 중심으로－ = A Study on the Commemoration of Personal Memories and Sense of Place through Visual Arts

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 사라진 장소와 기억을 시각예술로 재구성하고 기념비화하는 과정에서 나타나는 심리적, 사회적 의미를 탐구한다. 이를 위해 장소와 기억의 관계를 다룬 이론적 배경으로 에드워드 렐프(Edward Relph), 이푸 투안(Yi-Fu Tuan), 알라이다 아스만(Aleida Assmann)의 논의를 검토하였다. 이들의 이론은 공간이 단순한 물리적 영역에서 감정적이고 개인적인 의미를 가진 장소로 변모하는 과정을 설명하며, 기억의 기념비화가 집단적 정체성을 형성하는 데 미치는 영향을 다룬다.
서도호, 레이첼 화이트리드, 마야 린, 양혜규, 헤르난 바스의 작업을 사례로 분석하여, 각 작가가 사라진 장소와 기억을 시각적으로 재구성하는 방식을 탐구하였다. 이들 작가의 작업은 장소와 기억, 정체성의 관계를 다층적으로 보여주며, 개인적 경험이 예술적 매체를 통해 어떻게 확장될 수 있는지를 제시한다.
본 논문의 중심은 본인의 작품에 대한 분석이다. 유년기의 정글짐과 첫 작업실을 소재로 한 작품들은 사적 장소 상실에서 비롯된 정체성 탐구를 기반으로 한다. 이러한 작업들은 기억과 장소를 시각적으로 형상화하며, 관람객에게 장소 상실과 기억 보존의 중요성을 환기시키고자 한다.
결론적으로, 본 논문은 시각예술이 장소와 기억을 재구성하고 기념비화함으로써 개인적 정체성과 사회적 연속성을 유지하는 데 기여하는 방식을 제안한다. 이는 장소와 기억, 정체성 간의 복합적 관계를 새로운 시각으로 이해할 수 있는 예술적 접근을 제시한다.

This thesis explores the psychological and social significance of reconstructing and monumentalizing vanished places and memories through visual art. To this end, it examines the theoretical framework of Edward Relph, Yi-Fu Tuan, and Aleida Assmann regarding the relationship between place and memory. Their theories elucidate the transformation of space from a mere physical domain into a place imbued with emotional and personal significance, while also addressing how the monumentalization of memory contributes to the formation of collective identity.
The study analyzes the works of Do Ho Suh, Rachel Whiteread, Maya Lin, Haegue Yang, and Hernan Bas as case studies, investigating how these artists visually reconstruct vanished places and memories. Their practices demonstrate the multifaceted relationships between place, memory, and identity, offering insights into how personal experiences can be expanded through artistic media.
At the core of this thesis is an analysis of the author’s own works. Focusing on personal experiences of loss, such as childhood memories of jungle gyms and the disappearance of a first studio space, the artworks explore identity through the lens of private place loss. These works aim to visualize memories and places while evoking awareness among viewers about the importance of preserving memory and acknowledging the loss of place.
In conclusion, this thesis proposes that visual art contributes to the reconstruction and monumentalization of places and memories, playing a crucial role in maintaining personal identity and social continuity. It presents an artistic approach to understanding the complex relationships between place, memory, and identity from a new perspective.
