1894년 `공주대회전(公州大會戰)` 시기의 `공주 확거·고수` 전술과 `호서도회(湖西都會)` 개최 계획 = Tactics for “Securing and Defending Gongju” and Holding the “Hoseo Congress” during the “Great Gongju United Front War”, 1894

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

From October 23 to November 11, 1894, a fierce peasant battle was fought in Gongju, the capital of Chungcheong province, which decided the result of the Great Gongju United Front War. Existing studies are mostly based on the records of the Joseon dynasty and the Japanese army and merely provide a chronological narration of the war according to location, but they have rarely focused on its aims and tactics. The major focus of this study is to explore the tactics and aims of the Donghak leaders in the Great Gongju United Front War. Key findings include that the Great Gongju United Front War was not a chance war of encounter en route to Seoul as the Donghak leaders tried to carry out “the secret directions of Prince Daewongun.” In fact, the Donghak leaders of the South section, led by Jeon Bongjun, and the North section, led by Choi Sihyeong and Son Byeonghee, tried to hold the “Hoseo Congress” (or “Hoseo Convention”) by organizing an Anti-Japanese United Front involving loyal patriotic nobility and commoners, while they secured and firmly defended Gongju. In the process of reaching these findings, in the first chapter, the author analyzed the court investigation records of Jeon Bongjun and the records of the North section to explore the war tactics that both sections “agreed” to during the Gongju War. In the second chapter, the war tactics were inferred analogically by observing the main trends of the Donghak peasant army from a bird`s-eye view. The third chapter proved the existence of sympathizers inside the Gongju Provincial Administration, describing the way that they and the nearby peasant army acted, providing a historical background for their tactics in “Securing and Defending Gongju.”
