신도 감소시대의 한국불교 현황과 전망 = Current Status and Prospects of Korean Buddhism in the Age of Decreased Believers

Korean society in the 21st century is showing a different pattern from the existing order. The population is decreasing due to “low birth rate” and “aging,” and even “de-religiousization” is emerging.
As a global trend, Protestantism and Catholicism are also on the decline. The decline of the religious population has become an irresistible trend.
The future of religion is uncertain. Korean Buddhism has fewer believers and monks, and Korean Catholics are in a similar situation. Now religion must seek a new way out. Korean Buddhism is also concerned and public opinion is spreading that it is urgent to come up with alternatives.
One of the reasons for the decline in the number of Buddhists is that they neglected their social role. Although it is inevitable to consider external influences, there is a lack of awareness of problems within Buddhism and it is not able to adopt a method that responds to the trend of the times.
A breakthrough can be found when strengthening the social role of Buddhism. Specific and realistic measures should be established at the denomination level. It is not just a one-time slogan or show, but it is necessary to diagnose reality and create measures by di- viding it into short, medium, and long-term. In addition to the mission of the younger generation, the mission of the elderly and the metropolitan area should be strengthened. At the same time, it is necessary to deeply consider changes in the operation methods of the endings and temples. It is necessary to seek ways to foster reli- gious and longitudinal educated believers to assist monks.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

21세기 한국 사회는 기존 형태와는 다른 양상이 나타나고 있다. ‘저출산’ ‘고령화’로 인구가 줄어들고, ‘탈종교화’ 현상이 나타나고 있다. 세계적인 경향으로 개신교와 가톨릭의 교세도 하락 추세를 보이고 있다. 종교인구 감소는 거역할 수 없는 흐름이 되었고, 종교의 미래는 불투명하다. 한국불교는 신자와 출가자들이 줄어들고, 한국가톨릭도 비슷한 상황이다. 이제 종교는 새로운 활로를 모색해야 한다. 한국불교도 내부에서 우려와 함께 대안 마련이 시급하다는 여론이 확산되고 있다. 불교 신자가 감소하는 원인 가운데 하나는 그동안 사회적 역할을 소홀히 했기 때문이다. 외부의 영향을 고려하지 않을 수 없지만, 불교 내부의 문제 의식이 부족하고, 시대 흐름에 부응하는 포교 방식을 채택하지 못했기 때문이다. 따라서 현재 직면한 상황은 불교의 사회적 역할을 강화할 때 돌파구를 찾을 수 있다. 교단 차원에서 구체적이고 현실적인 방안을 수립해야 한다. 1회성 구호나 보여주기에 그치는 것이 아니라, 현실을 엄밀하게 진단하고 단기, 중기, 장기로 나눠 대책을 만들어야 한다. 젊은 세대 포교와 더불어 노인 및 수도권 포교도 강화해야 한다. 이와 함께 종단과 사찰의 운영 방안의 변화도 깊게 고민해야 한다. 신심 깊고 종단 차원의 교육 받은 신자를 양성해 스님들을 보좌하도록 하는 방안도 모색해야 한다.
