<AbsText> SOME TIME in the early seventies Julian Semyonov, the popular Soviet crime writer, was invited to an audience with Yuri Andropov, then the head of the KGB. During their chat, Andropov offered Semyonov the full co-operation of the KGB if he would write a novel featuring the department. TASS, published in 1979, was the result. Not only did the book become a seller of Archerean proportions in the Soviet Union, but when it was shown on state television it caused city streets to become deserted. </AbsText>
