금융 이해력 국제 비교를 위한 문항의 번역 편이 분석 = An Analysis on the Translation Bias for International Comparison of Financial Literacy

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to propose the points to be noted in the translation process by examining the validity of the test for international comparison of financial literacy. As a result of classifying the items according to differences in terms and systems, we found that most of the translation bias was caused by the problem of term selection. In particular, there was a tendency to inevitably provide clues to the correct answer in the process of translating those English abbreviations or taking into account differences in the system. On the other hand, when different systems were translated in each country's everyday terms, there was no significant difference in the percentage of correct answers. These results implies that in the international comparison of financial comprehension, item developers should avoid using the terms that contain abbreviations or proper nouns, while researchers who want to conduct international comparisons should be very careful when comparing financial literacy for questions that use those terms.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 금융 이해력의 국제 비교를 위한 문항의 타당성을 검토하여 번역 과정에서 유의해야 할 사항을 도출하였다. 문항을 용어와 제도의 차이로 구분하여 분류한 결과 번역 편이는 대부분 용어 선정의 문제로 인해 발생하는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 영어 약어로 표현된 것을 번역하거나 국가별 제도의 차이를 고려하여 번역하는 과정에서 불가피하게 정답에 대한 단서를 제공하게 되는 경향을 보였다. 반면 제도상의 차이가 있더라도 일상적인 용어로 각국의 사정에 맞는 제도로 번역할 수 있는 경우에는 정답률 차가 크게 나타나지 않았다. 이와 같은 결과는 금융 이해력 국제 비교에서 문항 개발자는 약어가 포함되거나 고유명사가 포함된 용어를 사용하는 것을 피할 필요가 있으며, 국제 비교를 수행하려는 연구자는 약어가 포함되거나 고유명사가 포함된 용어를 사용하는 문항의 경우에 매우 신중하게 금융 이해력을 비교해야 한다는 것을 시사한다.
