Jacob Collier의 화성진행을 통한 Negative Harmony의 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

대중음악은 끊임없이 발전하고 있다. 더 이상 쉬운 노래만이 듣기 좋은 노래라고 하는 시대는 지나갔으며, 작/편 곡가들은 언제나 새로운 창작 물을 내놓기 위해 부단히 공부하며 노력하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 Jacob Collier라는 아티스트를 통하여 이제 막 세상에 알려지기 시작한 Negative Harmony라는 이론을 발굴해내고 그것을 널리 알리는 것에 목적이 있다. 아직 국내외를 통틀어 Negative Harmony를 다루고 있는 서적이 없고, 지금까지 선행연구된 사례 또한 전혀 없었기 때문에 더욱 흥미가 생겨났으며, 인터넷상에 퍼져있는 자료들과 Youtube에 있는 인 터뷰 영상들을 기반으로 연구를 했다. 그래도 궁금증이 풀리지 않는 부 분은 한국에서 Negative Harmony를 처음으로 알려주신 분께도 질문하 였고, 일본에서 Negative Harmony를 연구하고 있는 피아니스트를 소개 받아서 도움을 요청하며 연구에 몰두했다. 그 결과 Negative Harmony 는 기존의 화성학보다는 상위 개념으로 자리 잡고 있으며, 작곡의 단계 보다는 편곡의 단계에서 주로 사용된다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 본 연구 를 통하여 Negative Harmony가 대중적으로 더 많은 사람들에게 접근 이 용이한 이론이 되기를 희망한다.

Popular music is continuously evolving. The era of easy listening music is gone. Now, song writers and arrangers are putting enormous effort to create new and different creation. The purpose of this thesis is to introduce, brand new theory, called ‘Negative Harmony’, which is introduced by the artist, Jacob Collier. I got fascinated by this topic since it was not possible to find any book or study on ‘Negative Harmony.’ So my study is based on information on internet and interview videos on YouTube. Further questions were answered by Korean pioneer who introduced ‘Negative Harmony’ and Japanese pianist who was studying on this topic. As a result, I found ‘Negative Harmony’ was considered as a super ordinate concept and used in the arrangement stage than songwriting stage. With my study, I strongly believe ‘Negative Harmony’ will become more popular theory which has easy access for everyone.
