The primary objective of this study was to empirically investigate the impact of media richness on users’ formation of mental imagery within VR tourism promotion videos produced with 360-degree cameras. Furthermore, it examined the mediating and moderating roles of interactivity, dynamism, and vividness in this process. Specifically, the study focused on the effect of media richness on interactive experiences, explored the moderating effect of dynamism on interactivity and vividness, and analyzed the serial mediation effects emerging during the mental imagery formation process.
An experimental research design was adopted, utilizing an online survey-based experiment. The experimental stimuli featured four representative tourist destinations on Jeju Island, South Korea (Hueree Natural Life Park, Hamdeok Beach, Olle Trail & Seongsan Ilchulbong, and Seopjikoji), captured using an Insta360 camera. The filming reflected typical tourist trajectories while naturally incorporating key scenic elements. During post-production, parameters such as scene transition speed, shot sequencing, subtitles, voice narration, and background music were adjusted to manipulate media richness and dynamism. The resulting VR videos were approximately one minute in length, providing a brief yet intensive immersive experience to enhance the efficiency of measuring mental imagery formation.
The research design employed a 2 (Media Richness: Multiple vs. Fewer) × 2 (Dynamism: Dynamic vs. Static) between-subjects factorial design, yielding four experimental conditions (High-Dynamic, High-Static, Low-Dynamic, and Low-Static). Initially, over 160 participants were recruited, with a minimum of 40 per condition. After excluding incomplete responses and outliers, data from 138 valid participants were used for the final analysis. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the conditions and experienced the corresponding VR video online via smartphone or PC. Subsequently, they completed surveys measuring key variables: media richness, interactivity, dynamism, vividness, and mental imagery formation. The survey was based on a five-point Likert scale, with balanced consideration of demographic characteristics such as age, gender, and residence.
The experimental procedure consisted of four stages. First, voluntary consent was obtained through explanations of the study purpose and personal information protection guidelines. Second, a pre-survey on prior VR experience and preferences was conducted to assess baseline perceptions. Third, participants watched the randomly assigned VR video, and their immersive experiences, along with cognitive and emotional responses, were measured. Fourth, the experiment concluded with a demographic survey. Prior to the main experiment, a pre-test was conducted with a limited number of participants to review item comprehension, response time, and manipulation levels, thereby optimizing the survey instrument.
The results indicated that higher media richness in VR videos significantly enhanced participants’ mental imagery formation. Furthermore, the moderating effects of dynamism on interactivity and vividness revealed a moderated serial mediation process. These findings suggest that immersive VR experiences can directly influence users’ psychological attitudes and mental imagery formation beyond mere observation. Additionally, the study implies that designing VR-based tourism promotion content with appropriate media richness, dynamism, interactivity, and vividness can enhance participants’ immersion and foster positive tourism attitudes. Academically, the study contributes to the theoretical expansion of tourism promotion and media psychology by empirically validating the structural relationships among VR experience, media richness, interactivity, vividness, and mental imagery. Practically, it provides foundational insights for strategic VR content production and the optimization of participant experiences in tourism promotion.
