      The present study aimed to investigate comparative anti-inflammatory effects of Syzygium samarangense (SS, Wax apple) leaf and branch extract considering the balance of safety and efficacy. SS is a plant species in the family Myrtaceae, native to an area that includes the Greater Sunda Islands, Malay Peninsula but now cultivated in Jeju Island. Dose response studies were conducted to determine the inhibitory effect of extracts on the expression of inflammatory enzymes: Prostaglandin (PGE₂) and nitric oxide (NO) inflammatory cytokine production, TNF-α, interleukin (IL)-6, interleukin (IL)-1β and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and cyclooxygenase (COX-2) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. As a result, SS were shown higher anti-inflammatory activity. SS inhibited production of PGE2, NO and mRNA expression of iNOS, COX-2 and decreased TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β induced by LPS stimulation in RAW 264.7 cells. SS at 800 μg/mL showed inhibitory effects on almost all the inflammatory mediators we examined except for all study regulation. In conclusion, this study suggest that SS could be a potential source as a new natural anti-inflammatory agent.
