This paper is on Seokpa(石坡) Lee Ha-Eung(李昰應)`s art theory who was a politician and a calligraphic painter(書畵家) in late Joseon Dynasty. Seokpa`s life was like a drama and in the name of art, he tried to communicate with the world through the drama.
Lee Ha-Eung has been widely recognized as a figure who led a dynasty with negative toughness at an urgent, historical transition period of late Joseon. Going through that declining history and political bitter struggles, however, he was an artist who created a number of works, which draws keen attention.
Ideals of self-philosophical art is embodied by Seokpa Lee Ha-Eung as aesthetic appreciation (審美) of realm of exquisite nature (性靈境). The aesthetic appreciation of realm of exquisite nature is not its novel, clever form or imitation of Hyobinhakbo (效嚬學步, imitating others without judgment of right or wrong) but expression of natural temper through clever thoughts with Cheongi (天機, the secrets of nature) and voluntary (自發的) creation. Thus, Cheongi (天機) is a term which means natural and voluntary inspiration and it is ultimately expressed as a creator`s innovative free and original mind through practical ethics (心學) of Wang Yangming (陽明).
Seokpa Lee Ha-Eung is an orthodox Confucian scholar in Joseon. He was initially absorbed in Buddhism but the practical ethics of the Zen sect and Yangming was support in his later years on the inside like water in the valley flowing under thin ice through his complicated life. Seokpa`s Chengi that supported himself is finally expressed as Kaishu painting (眞書畵).
Seokpa Lee Ha-Eung`s `embodiment of Cheongijabal aesthetic appreciation for realm of exquisite nature` is what was learned from the way of true nature (眞自然道) implied in all things in the universe; shaping for `cultivation of exquisite nature (陶冶性靈)`through a chance to be vital again (生機) and; the realm of aesthetic appreciation where artistic atmosphere of true self entering nirvana (眞我的) on Seokpa`s self-complacent calligraphic painting out of the earthly life lies on. It is a way of one`s own expression (我法) - a strong, conscious creative soul for recognition of self-existence (有我) in Seokpa`s artistic creation process with `cultivation of exquisite nature.` This realm of aesthetic appreciation is innovative free and original mind in Seokpa`s art that is oriented towards self-complacency and voluntariness, which is focused on his `self (我)` and the `recognition of self-existence` in Seokpa`s poetry and prose is embodiment of positive aesthetic appreciation for exquisite nature expressed through being voluntarily drawn by Cheongi, something implied in his inner self. Chusa (秋史) acclaimed Seokpa Lee Ha-Eung as `one whose Cheongi is pure, beautiful and at the same time, odd.`
