『논리-철학 논고』의 ‘부정적 사실’에 관하여

국문 초록 (Abstract)

비트겐슈타인의 『논고』에서 가장 난해한 문제 중 하나는 “긍정적 사실”과 “부정적 사실”이 무엇인지, 그리고 ‘현실’과 ‘세계’의 개념이 동일한 것이냐 하는 것이다. 포겔린과 피처는 ‘현실’이 ‘세계’보다 더 넓은 개념이라고 보았으며, 비트겐슈타인이 2.063에서 그것들을 동일화하는 것을 실수로 간주하였다. 그러나 그들은 “존립하는 사태들”과 “사태들의 존립”을 동일화하는 오류를 범했을 뿐이다. 블랙과 남경희는 『논고』에서 ‘현실’과 ‘세계’가 둘 다 부정적 사실들을 포함하는 것이기 때문에 동일하다고 주장하였다. 그러나 그들은 대단히 피상적인 논의를 하고 있을 뿐, 어떤 정당한 근거도 제시하지 않았고 또 제시할 수도 없다. 따라서 옳은 것은 『논고』에서 세계에는, 또 현실에는 부정적 사실이 존재하지 않는다는 것이다. 그리하여 『논고』에서 ‘전체 현실’과 ‘세계’는 동일하고 외연이 같다.
우리는 이 점을 『논고』라는 텍스트에 입각해서 해석하고 해명할 수 있다. 그러므로 포겔린의 주장, 즉 이 문제와 관련하여 어떤 완벽한 용어법의 복원도 가능하지 않다는 주장은 결코 옳지 않다. 더 나아가 『논고』에서 부정적 사실에 대한 논의는 “근본 사상”으로 나아가는 매우 중요한 경로이다. 그렇기 때문에 포겔린의 주장과 달리, 2.063의 언급은 매우 “깊은 체계적 중요성”을 지니고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

One of the most difficult problems related to the Tractatus is the definition of ‘positive facts’ and ‘negative facts’ and whether the concept of world is identical with that of reality. Fogelin and Pitcher regarded that the concept of reality is wider than that of world and claimed that Wittgenstein made a slip in identifying them at 2.063. However, they made nothing but a fallacy in identifying “existent state of affairs” with “the existence of state of affairs”. Black and Nam claim that the concept of reality is identical with the concept of world in the Tractatus because both of them contain negative facts. But their arguments are too superficial to offer a valid ground for their arguments. As a result, the concept of world in the Tractatus is identical with that of total reality because there are no negative facts - not only in world - but also in reality.
Furthermore, we can elucidate and solve our problems clearly on the basis of the Tratatus text. Hence, Fogelin’s insistence that he does not think “that there is any way to restore perfect terminological consistency to the text” can never be justified. And unlike Fogelin’s insistence, 2.063 has a very “deep systematic importance” because the investigation of negative facts was a very crucial route to the “fundamental thought” of the Tractatus.
