This study presents the findings of a research on the performance and control of selected transnationational corporations(TNCs) in Korea. The three types ot TNCs selected for this study are American, Japanese and European. The operations of each type of TNCs were analysized and compared with in Korea.
The main objectives of the study are to understand and analyze the following two theses : First, the performance of foreign direct investment through the foreign-invested trading subsidiaries of TNCs by the financial analysis.
Second, the import-export activities of foreign-invested trading firms in Korea.
This research is based on literature references and intensive personal interviews with more than 229 firms in trading firms. Because this study is exploratory in nature, the findings are descriptive and provide a basis for further research as well as useful information for scolars, policy makers, and business executives.
This exploratory research study focused on various financial analysis and management practices including foreign-invested trading subsidiaries of TNCs operating in Korea. Based in the reported findings, one may make the following tentative conclusions :
First, TNCs located in Korea were contribution to local business firms not only through increased output and export but also through various types of technical assistance and manpower traing.
Second, foreign-invested trading firms did' nt manage to diversify export market of Korean trading firms.
Third, performance to divert import market by foreign-invested trading subsidiaries had a negative influence to the policy for diversity of import market in Korea.
Fourth, in terms of types of trading firms, performance for diversity of import market by foreign-invested pure trading firms was the largest and the "Kap" ranking firms and "Eul" ranking firms was next rank individually. Especially, in Japaese trading subsidiary in the sector of manufacture the portion of import from the investing counties was relatively high.
