The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative importance of microsystem on adolescent problem behaviors in transition from elementary school to middle school.
The subjects were 338 adolescents - 4th and 6th graders of 3 elementary schools and second graders of 3 middle schools in Daejeon. Questionnaires included variables of organism(e.g. grade, secondary sex character, gender) and microsystem(e.g. family and school environment) that were expected to affect on adolescent problem behaviors. The data was analyzed by t-test, F-test, multiple regression, and hierarchical regression.
The major findings of this study were as follows:
First, adolescent problem behaviors were significantly different by grade. The second graders of middle school showed higher scores on depression·anxiety and aggression than the 4th and the 6th graders of elementary school. There were no significant differences by gender and the existence of secondary sex characters.
Second, of family environmental variables, the family's financial status affected on adolescent physical symptoms and depression·anxiety, but this variable did not influence on delinquency and aggression. There were no group differences on adolescent problem behaviors by parental education and occupation, and family structure.
Third, the microsystem had significant influence on adolescent problem behaviors. Adolescent internal problem behaviors were influenced by the family's financial status, and mother's support and parenting style as of family variables, and the relationships with peers and with teachers as of school variables. Adolescent external problem behaviors were affected by mother's parenting style and support, and relationships with teachers.
Fourth, of the micro system, the family's financial status had the greatest influence on adolescent internal problem behaviors, following by mother's parenting style, relationships with peers, gender, and relationships with teacher. In adolescent external problem behaviors, mother's parenting style had the greatest influence on the external problem behaviors, following by relationships with peers, and mother's support.
In conclusion, the findings of this study indicated that family variables were the most significant factors in explaining adolescent problem behavior in transition.
