Groundwater contamination by nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) is serious in rural agricultural area and the application of synthetic fertilizers and/or livestock manures are the major causes. NO3-N contamination is typically observed in highlands rather than in floodplain because of the fast infiltration due to the permeable surface geology. LID (low impact development) facilities are designed to exclude early rains by infiltrating through highly permeable media but can act as epicenters of nitrate contamination. This study was initiated with a purpose of removing nitrates from the infiltrating water by using agricultural byproducts as electron donors for denitrification and, thus, to reduce the nitrate contamination possibility from the infiltration or recharge facilities. For this study, experiments were performed using air-sealed, nitrogen gas-filled reactors and sand filled columns to simulate the soil or groundwater condition as much as possible.
At first, the denitrification efficiencies of various agricultural byproducts such as pine tree woodchips, dried cherry leaves, rice straws, and rice hulls were evaluated based on the experiments using air-sealed reactors. Even though the experiment using cherry leaves showed the fastest decomposition, the denitrification was not so fast as such because the pH (<5) far below the optimal condition (7.5~8.0) for denitrification was caused by the massive CO2 generation from the organic matter. The experiment based on rice straws also showed a massive decomposition but its denitrification was much faster. This difference was likely the results of the heavy leaching of alkaline (earth) metal ions (especially, K+, Na+, Mg2+) from the rice straws, and which prevented the severe pH decrease. The experiment using rice hulls showed the fast denitrification next to that of rice straws even though the CO2 generation of the former was not that much, and the formation of initial pH higher than 6.0 is suggested as the major reason. The amount of organic decomposition in the experiment using woodchips was nearly equivalent to that using rice hulls but showed the slowest denitrification probably due to the pH less than 5 even from the early stage of the reaction. These observations strongly suggest that denitrification rates are more dependent on the pH condition than the types of organic materials.
The second experiments were performed based on the woodchips by inducing pH values, which would be more close to the optimal pH for denitrification, using limestone powders. For these experiments, several columns were prepared filled with different materials: column A (control), which was filled only with carbonate-free sands, column B, which was filled with carbonate-free sands, woodchips, and column C, which was filled with carbonate-free sands, woodchips, and limestone powders. Results show that column C, which showed pH much higher than column B, showed a denitrification rate 3 times faster than the other. Furthermore, column C indicated another possibility of controlling Fe and Mn concentrations, which were increased by formation of reducing conditions, by making the water supersaturated with respect to siderite and rhodochrosite.
Finally, experiments investigating changes in contents and types of dissolved organic matters during decomposition were performed based on UV-visible absorbance and fluorescence analysis techniques and results were compared to the water chemistry. In the Exp I, the changes in organic carbon types were investigated during the decomposition of agricultural byproducts such as woodchips, cherry leaves, rice straws, and rice hulls and were compared with the denitrification rates. It was revealed from Exp I that the CO2 generation was mainly caused by the decomposition of aliphatic organic matters and the denitrification is more dependent on the pH rather than the amount of decomposed organics. In Exp II, the changes in organic carbon types by reaction with calcium carbonate were investigated. Similarly with the previous experiments, higher pH and faster denitrification were induced when limestone powder was used but the CO2 generation was much suppressed relative to the experiment without the limestone powder. In addition, the increasing patterns of aromatic organic carbons were different from those of DOC, which showed peak concentrations at the initial stages of the reaction. Refractory humic-like and fulvic-like aromatic organic carbons showed rapid increases in the initial stage by gradually leveling-off patterns with little fluctuation.
Most of the experiments performed during this study show a phenomenon that NH4 concentrations do not increase a lot during the early stage when denitrification occurs but decrease to very low concentrations during the stage when sulfate reduces. This strongly suggests that anammox by reacting with nitrite and sulfate plays the important role in controling ammonium concentrations generated during the organic matter decomposition. Further studies are required.
