In this case study, an advanced adult Taiwanese learner was closely observed in an attempt to investigate the kinds of communication strategies the learner employs in English conversation, First, the results of the study showed that the participant used some particular communication strategies such as paraphrasing and the appeal for assistance more often than other strategies. Second, investigating the internal conditions of the subject through interviews suggested that her attitude towards L2 culture was restricting the development of her English learning process. Thus, the findings of the study were divided into the following three categories; communication strategies, affective variables (personality, attitude, and motivation), and cultural factors, In order to analyze the communication strategies the participant used, Tarone`s (1977) typology of communication strategies was adopted. In the conclusion, the issues of assessing the communication strategies of students and teaching communication skills and strategies in classrooms are also discussed.
