This thesis surveys which color is the most needed for residents on the basis of five azimuth colors of Fengshui and Sajumyongri theories. And it also suggests how to organize interior colors of a house with the survey results. For this purpose, five absolute azimuth colors of Fengshui and five relative azimuth colors of Sajumyongri are mixed together, and then universal colors for an each house and unique colors for individual resident shall be suggested.
Unlike an ancient agricultural society, the ratio of multi-unit dwellings has been increasing in modern living culture rather than that of individual houses. Multi-unit dwellings are mainly apartments and they are decorated common designs and colors, not individual distinctive ones. However, one of the most important aspects of interior design is color composition. And according to western research, colors have significant effects on human psychology.
The East has its traditional colors, that is, five azimuth colors. They are from an Eastern traditional philosophy, Yin-Yang and the Five Elements theory, which has been applied to various fields, such as colors, architecture, interior architecture, design, clothes, foods, medicine, etc. And the five azimuth colors tend to be organized by the universal principle, not focusing on an individual.
Color composition of modern interior design, therefore, needs to consider its appropriateness for each family member as well as a whole family. Thus, this research tries to apply Fengshui theory, an Eastern traditional location theory and five azimuth colors of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements theory that determines the fate of human beings.
From the old times, the most important aspect for Korean people when they build or choose a house is a ‘site’. Because they have a firm faith that a good site can make its residents blessed with good luck. Otherwise, they are destined for disaster.
Korean traditional residence is based on that kind of vision of the universe and nature, when planning a house, choosing a site, deciding the organization, placement and shape of the house, etc. And every element and the relation with other elements have their own meaning and symbolic significance and develop the order of the universe. A house is really important for Koreans because it is considered having a microcosmic value. ‘Site’ is also so important for them that they usually consider Fengshui as a priority when they choose it. A good site for a house is the place that Yin and Yang are in harmony. In addition, its shape needs to offer residents an optimum living environment that can gather the energy from heaven and earth as lucky physiognomy. Thus, a house is not an area only for living, but kind of expansion of each family member as well as a whole family and a unique place for their life. That is, a house is the most ideal place for a family.
Sajumyongri theory is kind of a balance scale. It is a science that extrapolates a person’s destiny from the elements of his/her birth. In addition to Fengshui, it is one of the main folk beliefs in Korea. Sajupalja, the four pillars of destiny, is a Chinese astrological concept that a person's destiny or fate can be divined by the two sexagenary cycle characters assigned to their birth year, month, day, and hour. And the five forces from wood, fire, earth, metal, and water interact one another and try to make a balance by counteraction, that is, supplementing others’ lack and pressing or removing their excess. With it, someone’s success, failure, good luck or bad luck can be predicted.
In Fengshui, choice of a house is decided by Li and Ch'i and Hyoung Ch'i theories. Li and Ch'i theory is a natural philosophical Fengshui based on Yin-Yang and the five elements theory. And Hyoung Ch'i theory is a physiographical Fengshui, which deals with shape and vitality of land and its geographical conditions. Furthermore, there is another important theory, the Four Sacred Mountains of Fengshui, which means the shape of the mountains or nature surrounding the core of a site throughly. It calls the east Cheongryong (blue Dragon), the west Baekho (White Tiger), the north Hyeonmu (Black Tortoise), and the south Jujak (Red Phoenix). And the Eastern azimuth colors are blue (the east), white (the west), black (the north) and red (the south). If the four sacred mountains guard the core site, it means the four azimuth colors guard yellow, the core color.
Modern colors are a symbolic means of delivering image of a space and also they are decorative and pictorial elements. And by adding emotions into them, they are used as a necessary means of expression for emotional, psychological, and physical stability. This treatment concept is used most in the field of psychology and oriental medicine. Although various effects of colors on each sensory organ of the body have not been proved well in the field of preclinical medicine or alternative medicine, the application of colors to treatment has gradually increased. Thus, without moving, some faults of a house can be supplemented by using traditional five azimuth colors based on Yin-Yang and the five elements for the purpose of psychological healing and emotional stability.
Therefore, this thesis applies the five azimuth colors to Fengshui and Sajumyongri theories and suggests an appropriate color for each direction of a house and customized color composition for residents. To apply the colors to interior architecture, an appropriate color composition design according to the characteristics of each family member is suggested. For this purpose, the concept and true nature of the colors are investigated. After that, with actual cases, it tries to create interior color design and especially analyzes five traditional azimuth colors and five primary ones.
In addition, five coexisting intercardinal direction colors and five incompatible intercardinal direction ones are researched as a way of modern application. First, a 24 cardinal direction wheel is changed into a 24 color wheel to recognize them at the same time. Secondly, the 24 cardinal direction-color wheel is applied to floor plans to find out the exact location for supplementary colors, which are the colors that supplement some faults of a place with good energy. Thirdly, the exact location and supplementary colors are applied when choosing finish materials and interior accessories. As a result, the Eastern traditional colors can be applied to the interior color composition and with it, modern color composition is also possible.
