This research consisted of two studies, (Study 1 and Study 2), and was designed to find out some predictors for breakup of romantic relationships that college students had experienced. The purposes of Study 1 were to search for breakup-related variables through both literature review and pilot study, to determine some factors for the breakup among the variables, and to examine any differences of the factors in relation to duration of the romantic relationships. Four factors, that is, IOCF(intimacy and one's own commitment factor), EPOVF(estimating partner with one's own value factor), MIBF(momentary investment and its feeling of burden factor), and CPF (commitment of partner factor) were extracted from 29 breakup-related variables. There found significant differences in the duration of the romantic relationships only for the IOCF, EPOVF, and MIBF. Study 2 was to examine if the four factors could be predictive of breakups for romantic relationships that the respondents have currently engaged in. It was found that the IOCF and CPF measured at initial state of the romantic relationships were significant predictors for the breakups which some of the respondents had experienced within five weeks since the relationships were initiated. It was also found that the CPF measured at five weeks from the initiation of the relationship were initiated were significant predictors for the breakups which they had experienced within ten or fifteen weeks since the relationships were initiated. In addition, it was found the EPOVF and MIBF measured at ten weeks from the initiation of the relationship were significant predictors for the breakups which they had experienced within fifteen weeks since the relationships were initiated. With the findings of this research, the development and the application of counseling and education programs for the adolescents were discussed.
