This study analyzes TV drama images of grandmothers participating in the raising of their grandchildren and provides realistic and feasible suggestions concerning raising grandchildren. This qualitative content analysis of five soap operas depicting grandmothers and grandchildren, gathered from the drama scenarios on 3 TV stations focuses on drama content concerned with images of grandmothers in relationships with their grandchildren and others. The results of this study are: 1) from a personality perspective, the images of grandmothers are revealed as ``loving their grandchildren``, ``unselfish, and moral``, and ``patient`` 2) in terms of role, the images of grandmothers are portrayed as ``psychological and material providers``, ``educators``, and ``grandchildren supporters`` 3) in terms of status, two oppositional images are portrayed: ``a grandmother with high authority within the family`` and ``a grandmother who has lost her authority in the family``. These findings reflect today`s social-cultural state and expectations: we expect traditional images of grandmothers in terms of personality and role in South Korea`s current social context, while two conflicting views are coexisting in terms of the grandmother`s position of authority in the family.
