SF 영화 <가타카(GATTACA)>에 나타난 주요 상징 기호 분석 = Research to the important symbolic signs in the SF film GATTACA

GATTACA is a science fiction film about the future genetic hierarchy and control society. It is a work that sparked public interest and debated about genetic engineering. The film states the question, ‘Is it reasonable to manipulate life beyond the providence of God or the nature?’ Furthermore, it conveys the messages that there is no perfect science, that science alone cannot fully comprehend or explain human beings, and that science can always degenerate as a tool to control human beings. GATTACA sharply criticizes the scientific perfection ideology, the new eugenics ideology, and the groups that promote them. However, the film does not deny that humans have lived through science to make up for the lack of nature; it deals with the problem of finding the ‘new balance between nature and science’. The director’s critical messages and questions are evident, not only through the composition and content of the film, but also through various symbols closely placed throughout the film. The important symbols (especially the body, the Gattaca office building, the sea, the DNA image, and the murder) are organically intertwined, conveying the message of the film in various ways, deriving various nuances, and raising the aesthetic level of the film. Therefore, this article helps to understand the meaning of the multidimensional reflection of GATTACA more deeply and more clearly by clarifying the detailed connection structure and multi-layered meaning of the symbols.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

<가타카>는 미래 유전자 계층⋅통제사회를 다룬 SF 영화로 유전공학에 대한 대중적 관심과 논쟁을 불러일으킨 작품이다. 영화는 ‘신의 섭리나 자연의 순리를 넘어서 생명을 조작하는 것이 타당한 일인가?’라는 질문을 던진다. 그리고 완전무결한 과학은 없고, 과학만으로 인간을 온전히 이해하거나 설명할 수 없으며, 과학은 언제든 인간을 통제하는 도구로 전락할 수 있다는 메시지를 전달한다. <가타카>는 과학을 만능으로 여기는 이데올로기나 새로운 우생학 이데올로기 그리고 그것을 조장하는 집단에 비판적 시각을 던진다. 그러나 인간이 과학을 통해 자연의 부족함을 메꾸며 살아왔다는 것을 부정하지 않으며, ‘자연과 과학의 새로운 균형’을 찾는 문제도 심도 있게 성찰한다. 이러한 감독의 비판적 메시지와 문제 제기는 영화의 구성이나 내용 뿐 아니라, 작품 곳곳에 치밀하게 배치된 여러 가지 상징 기호들을 통해서 여실히 드러난다. 그 상징 기호들(특히 몸, 가타카 사옥, 바다, DNA 이미지, 살인)은 유기적으로 얽히고설켜 작품의 메시지를 다양한 방식으로 전달하고 다채로운 뉘앙스를 파생시키며 영화의 미학적 수준을 높이 끌어올린다. 따라서 이 글은 그 상징들의 세밀한 연결 구조와 다층적 의미를 선명하게 밝혀봄으로써, <가타카>가 품고 있는 다차원적 성찰의 의미들을 더욱 깊고 섬세하게 이해하는 데 도움을 준다.
