The types of websites are becoming diversified, the contents are becoming extensive and the structures of websites are becoming complex. Websites are connected to our everyday lives in various areas, thus the importance of websites is increasing day by day not only in businesses, but also for individual users.
However, users fail to make full use of websites due to various problems related to navigation, thus fail to fulfil their purposes. Users are seeking for ways to find required information in an easier way.
Navigation in a website is designed as a movement structure within a three-dimensional space to be displayed on the two-dimensional screen. Navigation serves the role of assisting users to achieve their required goals by enabling them to intuitively grasp the structure and flow of the corresponding website. Therefore, it is an impending task to perform studies on navigation, which assists users to accomplish their purposes of using websites.
The users purpose of using website differs in accordance with the type of websites. While attempting at understanding the different purposes of users per each type of website, it would be enabled to achieve further complete navigation design. Navigation, when successfully planned and designed, enables users to achieve their purposes and to gain satisfactory experiences of using the website. Therefore, successfully designed navigation promotes first-time visitors to a website to become faithful users, thus may exert direct influence upon the success or failure of the business.
In this study, firstly, general consideration and definition of concept on navigation have been made on the basis of theoretic background followed by reviewing of related theories. Then, overall investigation has been performed on the users understanding, website structure and interface design to promote realization of more embodied navigation implementation.
Secondly, based on the overall investigation, design elements of navigation displayed in three types of websites, such as of shopping mall, portal and community sites have been analyzed to study the characteristics of navigation, which supports users to accomplish purposes in each type of website.
For conclusion, principles have been set for navigations to suit the purposes and functions per each type of website.
