The purpose of this study is to investigate teachers’ perception and practices about the observation of children following the types of child care center. In order to accomplish these research goals, a total of 245 child care teachers in Seoul and Gyeonggido were selected, and were made to answer a questionnaire with 49 questions, all related to observation of children.
As a result of the survey, the teachers’ perception about children observation differed according to type of child care center. Home child care center and Work child care center teachers being more aware of the need to understand development level of children through observation, Home child care teachers recognized basic daily habits behaviors and Work child care teachers recognized that more peer and social development behavior should be observed.
Regarding the use of observation results, Work child care center teachers reflected observation results in the planning and operation of child care curriculum rather than at national child care centers.
The practices of the children observation showed some different characteristics according to child care center type. Teachers of the Work child care center observe and record activities of the basic life habits behaviors in anecdotal records, while Home child care teachers were using checklists for basic lifestyle behavior.
