The best way to discuss this issue, I have decided after weighing alternatives and examining several past attempts, is to try to answer several crucial questions. Employing Aristotle's dictum, to avoid the extremes of excess and deficiency, I shall strive to avoid two emphases, i.e., of discussing purely theoretical, conceptual issues on the one hand, and solely practical, "applied" problems on the other hand. Both the conceptual and the practical are required in any helpful inquiry into the assigned question of "religious values"; the former without the latter is sterile, and the "practical" without the conceptual is dangerous.
