생성어휘부 이론의 유형강제 현상 연구에 대한 재고와 우선순위 당연 논리 기반의 새로운 접근 = A Critical Review of Generative Lexicon Theory`s Approach to Type Coercion and a New Approach: Prioritized Default Logic, Context and Meaning

This paper aims to critically review the main approaches to type coercion, specially Generative Lexicon theory (henceforth, GL), and suggest a new approach. I present my answer to the three questions: the source and the nature of type coercion, what changes by type coercion, and the interpretation mechanism of type coercion constructions (Ahser, 2015). Regarding the first question, I argue that the lexical semantic property of the governing predicate is not the source of type coercion but just a clue to recognize it. In addition, I suggest to begin from a full sentence and ask why speakers use type coercion constructions, what is the condition in which type coercion is allowed, and how listeners recognize and interpret type coercion constructions. A more important point is that we should consider the complement`s co-occurrence constraint as well as the predicate`s selection restriction to explain when type coercion is allowed. As regards the second question, I adopt Asher (2011)`s argument that type coercion changes the predication relation between a predicate and its complement, not the complement`s semantic type. Then, we need to ask if type coercion is the right tool for explaining begin the book. About the relation between lexical meaning and context, I support the GL`s intermediate position. Unfortunately, GL has no mechanism to prioritize the senses of a word and reflect the contextual effect on the meaning change of words. In order to solve the problem, I introduce the Prioritized Default Logic. Type coercion can be explained well with the logic.
