Though if a book is obscene of not has been discussed for a long time, we haven't arrived at any good conclusions. According to the time passes, our thoughts have changed and became generous to the obscenity.
In our society some books have been prohibited from publishing because of ugliness and unhealthiness to the people until now. But some books such as The Lady Chatterley's Lover which had been banned were rescued from obscenity after many trials.
D. H. Lawrence, a different writer explored the human nature through sex in this book. He openly, honestly, tenderly meant to say about sex to the readers. He repeatedly persuade the readers that the life only can be accomplished when the mind and the body are in harmony. So he let Lady Chatterly and Mellors have physical relationships in which tenderness, passion and respect flow. And also he saw we can be reborn from modern industrial, mechanical society through vitality, tenderness of sex.
In this book Lawrence described lots of physical love scenes in detail. But as Lawrence put focusing on the sexual thoughts rather than sexual act, he is excused from th obscenity.
And though he was accused of being obsessed with sex, the words and some scenes that shocked at first are not any longer if sexual passage falls into place as parts of the novel's subject. And also they gain the meaning as parts of that larger whole. To search for integrity completely, rich, honest sexual passages were necessary for the writer.
Now the question that a book is art or obscenity doesn't matter. The more important point is if the book has beauty or not. The conclusion should be leave to the reader's mind instead of law issue.
