While The Canterbury Tales is famous for its God`s plenty, only five tales in the book accept the role of woman as mother. Even worse their presence is relatively insignificant except for a few tales. This study aims to explore why and how this happens. This study starts from an assumption that the tripartite structure of lay women`s estates mainly concerns the role of woman as a virgin, a wife or a widow and fails to recognize her as a mother. The thesis of this study is that The Reeve`s Tale, The Man of Law`s Tale, and The Clerk`s Tale reveal the problems inherent in the idea of motherhood in medieval patriarchy. The Reeve`s Tale shows that mother is not a meaningful criteria in the perception of woman and that only corporeality counts whether she is mother or not. On the other hand, The Man of Law`s Tale and The Clerk`s Tale reveal the contradictory nature of the norms on motherhood and wifehood which medieval patriarchy inculcates upon women. One of the most important tenets of medieval patriarchy is that a wife should produce a legitimate heir. Through an analysis of the cases of a dowager queen and a marquise who has produced a legitimate heir in each tale, this study argues that the patriarchal tenet, paradoxically enough, confines and extends the power and role of a mother at a stretch and that the maternal power rebounds upon history in spite of the patriarchal narrative strategies which try to contain it.
