급진적 파이어 투자자의 탄생 - 한국 파이어 운동의 자산전략과 도덕 경제 = The Birth of the Radical FIRE Investors - Focusing on Asset Strategies and the Moral Economy of the Korean FIRE Movement

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 최근 한국 사회에서 유행한 ‘금융/투자 문화’의 한 조류이자 청년들의 투자 관행을 상징하는 ‘대표 기표’로서 파이어 운동에 담긴 사회적 의미를 해석한다. 이 운동이 처음 발원한 미국의 사례를 분석의 참조점으로 삼아 우리 사회에서 출현한 파이어 운동의 고유한 특징과 사회적 맥락을 분석한다. 파이어 저서와 인터뷰 등으로 구축한 표본 자료를 토대로, 파이어에 이르는 재무적 경로와 이를 뒷받침한 도덕 경제적 감정의 특징을 각각 분석한다. 먼저, 재무 경로와 전략의 측면에서 뚜렷한 차이가 발견된다. 한국의 파이어 결정 구조는 ‘절약의 정식’으로 요약되는 미국의 단순 방정식을 넘어, ‘투자의 정식’을 더한 복합 방정식 체계로 구성된다. 달리 말해, 한국의 파이어족들에게 파이어 목표의 실현은 이 두 정식을 동시에 푸는 문제로 등장했고, 이를 수행하는 과정에서 그들은 미국의 원형과 견주어 매우 이질적인 도덕 경제적 질서를 만들어낸다. 이를테면, 투자 본위의 재무 경로와 급진적 파이어 접근법, 검약 규범의 도구화, 몰입형 집중 투자전략 등이 그것이다. 파이어 동기 면에서는 장시간 고강도 노동 관행과 경쟁적이고 경직된 조직 문화에 대한 반감, 자산 시장을 중심으로 위계화된 계층 질서에 따른 지위 획득의 어려움이나 상실 가능성으로 인한 위기감이 중요하게 작용한 반면, 소비주의나 금융시스템에 대한 비판은 두드러지지 않는다. 이러한 요소들이 복합적으로 작용한 결과, 한국 파이어 운동의 기본 정향은 자산경제적 기반의 창출과 규율화된 투자 실천을 특히 중시하는 방향으로 굳어진다. 파이어족이 꿈꾸는 ‘자유’의 의미 역시 소유(권)적 자유주의 전통에서 유래하는 자원주의적 논리로 축소되는 경향이 나타난다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study interprets the social meaning of the FIRE(Financial Independence Retire Early) movement as one of the trends of the recent ‘financial/ investment culture’ in Korean society and as a ‘signifier’ of youth investment practices. Using the case of the United States, where the movement originated, as a comparative case, it analyzes the unique features and social context of the FIRE movement in Korea. Based on the sample data constructed from FIRE books and interviews, it analyzes the financial path to FIRE and the moral economic sentiments that underpinned it, respectively. First, it finds distinct differences in terms of financial paths and strategies to FIRE. The Korean FIRE resolution structure is composed of a complex system of equations that goes beyond the American simple equation summarized as the ‘formula of saving’ and adds the ‘formula of investment’. In other words, for Korean FIRE communities, the realization of FIRE goals emerged as a matter of solving these two equations simultaneously, and in doing so, they create a moral economic order that is very different from the American archetype. For example, the investment-driven financial path and radical FIRE approach, instrumentalization of frugal norms, and immersive and intensive investment strategies. In terms of FIRE motivations, antipathy to long and intense labor practices, competitive and rigid workplace cultures, and a sense of crisis due to the difficulty in obtaining status or the possibility of losing status in a hierarchical order structured around asset markets were important, while criticism of consumerism and the financial system were less prominent. As a result of combination of these moral economic sentiments, the basic orientation of the Korean FIRE movement solidified in favor of the creation of an asset economic foundation and disciplined investment practices. The meaning of ‘freedom’ as they envisioned it also tended to be reduced to a voluntaristic logic derived from a tradition of possessive liberalism(individualism).
