This article presents an archaeobotanical research at Songguk-i, r Buyeo, and discusses its implication in relation to plant cultivation and crop composition in the Mumun period. Although the previous studies at Songguk-ri have shown that the site occupants relied on rice and millet, the data for these studies were collected inn usystematic manners and a full crop spectrum of the site has not been clearly understood. The current study conducted flotation and wet-sieving on 21 archaeological features that included 14 pit-dwellings and 7 underground pits, and led to the discovery of a diversity of carbonized crop remains, such as rice, wheat, foxtail millet, broomcorn millet, soybean, and adzuki bean. The most dominant taxa were rice and foxtail millet, measured by the shear number of discovered grains and the number of archaeological features in which the grain remains were present. Because rice and foxtail millet overlap in their growing seasons, it is assumed that people cultivated these plants at different locations during the same seasons, e.g., rice in wet paddy fields in the lowland and millets along the hill slopes. A future research is suggested in order to understand the importance of other crops, especially wheat, barley and legumes.
