Growing concerns over climate change and the precipitous decline in renewable electricity costs over recent decades have positioned electrochemistry as a cornerstone of the challenging transition toward a sustainable circular economy. At the heart of this shift lies the hydrogen economy, which relies critically on both the efficiency of hydrogen production and its utilization in energy conversion systems. These systems are being continuously refined through careful design principles to meet future requirements, while recent research efforts have focused on creating low-cost electrocatalysts with superior durability and selectivity. In a broad context, electrocatalysis refers to the investigation of electrode processes where kinetics are profoundly influenced by the physicochemical nature of the localized electrochemical interface.
Understanding these interfacial reactions at the atomic and molecular levels through theoretical and experimental approaches enables the establishment of strategic research directions that transcend existing limitations. The surface dynamics at the local electrode–electrolyte boundary govern stability and selectivity, directly dictating functional performance. Therefore, a fundamental grasp of these local interfaces provides a foundation for integrated design strategies that move beyond simple efficiency gains toward the rational engineering of sustainable electrochemical technologies.
In this study, we target electrochemical catalytic reactions for efficient hydrogen production and hydrogen end-use applications by investigating dynamic electrode interfaces, including redox behavior and local concentration gradients. We propose carbon encapsulation engineering for non-precious iron single-atom catalysts of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) cathode, thereby enhancing both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance and fuel-cell durability. Furthermore, we elucidate the critical role of cerium oxide (CeO2) in selective oxygen evolution and subsequent hydrogen production through interfacial microenvironment modulation and electronic redistribution.
Chapter 1 summarizes the basic concepts of the dynamic interfacial electrocatalysis that operate locally at electrode–electrolyte interface. It also provides an overview of oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction (water oxidation reaction), with particular emphasis on their reaction mechanisms and interfacial characteristics under operating conditions.
In Chapter 2, carbon encapsulation engineering for iron single-atom electrocatalysts (Fe–N–C) was investigated to enhance durability while maintaining activity under acidic PEMFC conditions. Using a post-pyrolysis strategy with precursor compounds such as phenanthroline, the encapsulation layer compensates for surface defects and modifies the Fe coordination structure, effectively reconstructing the interface environment toward a more stable and less destructive pathway. Comprehensive analyses, including in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), Fe redox transition behavior, and real-time DEMS monitoring, revealed that the encapsulated catalysts exhibit a favorable balance between active and stable FeN4 configurations and effectively mitigate carbon corrosion. Considering that interfacial engineering for single-atom catalysts has been relatively limited, these findings can be proposed as a novel catalytic design strategy. This work highlights a practical pathway toward long-term stable and efficient non-precious metal catalysts for next-generation fuel cells.
Then, the focus expanded toward a broader concept of the electrode interface, encompassing the influence of the local electrolyte environment as well. Chapter 3 demonstrated the efficient anodic oxygen evolution strategies and catalyst design principles for water electrolysis systems aimed at hydrogen production. Cerium oxide is introduced as an effective promoter in a representative nickel hydroxide-based oxygen evolution catalyst model. Local pH profiling reveals that CeO2 increases the local concentration of reaction intermediates at the electrochemical interface, thereby promoting an environment favorable for efficient oxygen evolution. In addition, the reversible redox behavior of CeO2 serves to redistribute electrons, effectively mitigating the overoxidation of nickel hydroxide–a long-standing challenge–and enabling a balanced catalyst platform with high activity and durability. This approach reconstructs the electrochemical environment in a manner distinct from conventional strategies and highlights the critical role of the interfacial microenvironment in governing selective electrochemical reactions.
