방범용 CCTV의 주·야간 범죄예방효과 비교 = Comparison of the Daytime and Nighttime Crime Prevention Effects of Open-street CCTV

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Since 1990s, starting from the United Kingdom, a growing number of CCTV have been installed around the world for a purpose of crime prevention. In Korea, there has also been a rapid increase in CCTV throughout the cities of different sizes, with the first installation in the Gangnam district in Seoul in December, 2002.
Despite this trend in addition to numerous studies examining the crime prevention effects of CCTV, a research that studies the difference between the effects of the cameras during daytime with that of nighttime has not been conducted. In this study, through Geocoding and multiple regression analysis with a sample of the CCTV installed in Chuncheon in the Gangwon province, the difference in the crime prevention effects between the two time periods of a day are compared.
The results indicate that the CCTV are an effective crime prevention measure though a significant difference between the effects during the day and night is not found. This result provides important insight into the theoretical discussion of the effectiveness of the CCTV installed for crime prevention and will be able to contribute to an efficient management of the police workforce.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

방범용 CCTV는 비교적 최근에 영국을 중심으로 전 세계에 빠르게 퍼져나갔다. 우리나라에서도 2002년 12월 강남구에서 방범용 CCTV가 최초로 설치된 이래 각 대도시와 중소도시에 방범용 CCTV 설치가 급격히 확산되고 있다.
급속한 방범용 CCTV 확산과 더불어 지금까지 방범용 CCTV의 범죄예방효과에 관한 많은 연구가 행해졌지만, 방범용 CCTV의 효과가 주간과 야간에 차이가 있는지를 살펴본 연구는 없었다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 강원도 춘천 지역에 설치된 방범용 CCTV를 대상으로 이들의 주 야간 범죄예방효과를 지오코딩(Geocoding)과 다중회귀 분석을 통해 비교하였다.
분석 결과, 방범용 CCTV가 주간과 야간 모두에서 범죄예방효과를 가지지만 주간 및 야간 효과에 큰 차이가 없다는 것을 보여주었다. 이러한 연구결과는 방범용 CCTV가 범죄예방에 효과가 있는 지에 대한 이론적 논의를 더 분명하게 하고, 또 범죄예방을 위한 경찰의 효율적 자원 운용에도 도움을 줄 수 있다.
