A Study on the Role and Intervention Strategies of Mental Health Professionals for North Korean DefectorsThe mental health services for NK defectors have not noticeable results, even though North Korean (NK) defectors who are settling in the society of South Korea are rapidly increasing and severely suffering from mental health problems such as depression, PTSD and adjustment disorder. For the effective mental health service, professional services should correspond to the needs of NK defectors. The guidelines for intervention and role of mental health professionals need to be specified. Thus, this study suggests specific intervention strategies and role of mental health professionals for NK defectors. The intervention strategies are mental health education and consultation to NK defectors and community, resource mobilization and connection, counseling and psychotherapy. In addition, the intervention strategies include appropriate coordination between professionals and paraprofessionals and multi-disciplinary team organization.
