Copper(Ⅱ) reacts rapidly with chromazurol S(CAS) (3"-sulpho-2", 6"-dichloro-3, 3'-dimethyl-4'-hydroxyfuchson-5, 5' dicarboxylic acid, sodium salt) in water-ethanol solution at pH 6.7 to form a blue solution of a 1:1 complex having abosorption peak at 590nm, The copper(Ⅱ)-CAS complex is stable for at least twelve hours. The system conforms to Beer's law. Optimum range for 1.00cm optical path is 1×10 exp (-6) to 1.3×10 exp (-5)M of copper(Ⅱ).
The order of the additin of reagents has no effect upon the absorbance. The molar absorptivity at 590nm is 3.0×10 exp (4)liter mole^-1 cm^-1 and the sensitivity which give the absorbance of 0.001 is 0.0021 ug cm^-2.
Among twelve kinds of metal ions only Sn(Ⅱ)and Bi(Ⅱ) ions seriously interfered with the determination.
The composition ratio and the formation constant of the copper(Ⅱ)-chromazurol S complex have been evaluated from spectrophotometric data.
