This study explores the visual frame of Korea Central TV"s the inter-Korean summit broadcasting coverage. The first step is to derive the visual frme characteristics of the coverage of the inter-Korean summit on Korea Central TV through the analysis period from the first from June 13 to 15, 2000, the second from October 2 to 4, 2007, the third from April 27 to 28, 2018, the fourth in May 26 to 27, and the fifth from the September 18 to 21. A total of 4,438 cuts, including 1,860 reporting cuts and 2,578 movie reporting cuts, were analyzed by video structural elements, video expression techniques, visual thematic frame analysis, and article cuts analysis. In the next step, 14 visual thematic frames derived through an inductive research method on all cuts were structured into 6 integrated frames, and 2 contextual frames(keeping regime frames, and trying change frames), and a visual frame analyses, including frequency analysis, content analysis, and visual thematic analysis, are conducted.
As a result of the analysis, Korea Central TV highlighted Kim Jong-un's personal characteristics based on the supreme leader frame and cultivated the greatness of the young and active supreme leader. Second, Korea Central TV emphasized the image of a normal country through Ri Sol-ju by using the first lady's highlight frame. Third, Korea Central TV's coverage rate, broadcasting rate, and current affairs (fast news) of the inter-Korean summit decreased. Fourth, Korea Central TV expanded the use of a frame seeking change, but also strengthened the keeping regime frames. Fifth, Korea Central TV attempted to use various screens, but anecdotally reported the inter-Korean summit.
This study is the first to focus on the visual frames of the Korea Central TV reports, and it is meaningful to provide an opportunity to identify how the Korea Central TV frames important historical events on the Korean Peninsula and to structure the characteristics of the Korea Central TV visual frames. In addition, by systematizing the research method of the Korea Central TV"s visual frame, it provides an analytical framework for how to interpret the Korea Central TV broadcasting reports on inter-Korean events in the future and has practical usefulness that can be used in subsequent research.
