The objective of this essay is not only to explore how women in the sex trade and Amerasians around US military bases have been represented in Korean literature since 1945. Rather I want to interpret the political implications of the existence of women in the sex trade and Amerasians in South Korea in relation to the power relations of nation, gender, class and race. Furthermore, by reinterpreting the suffering and resistance of the underprivileged, I want to expand the understandings of their lives. I categorize Korean literature on this issue into three perspectives, nationalist, feminist and the politics of possibilities. I critically examine the conventional two perspectives through the politics of possibilities which have not shown othered inquires and interpretations of this issue.
The most middle class male writers have shown a nationalist perspective. The main characteristics of novels based on this perspective are that in most cases, a male narrator is a protagonist and the central question is about nation in relation to U.S. and focus on the violence of GIs and the imperialist nature of U.S. Women in the sex trade are subjects of pity, sympathy, disdain and redemption. The logic of nationalism is the exclusive relationship between us and them and it easily occludes patriarchal violence within a Korean nation. In order to reproduce a nation-state which is bound to a biologically essentialist notion of racial purity, women is to mobilize both symbolically and physically. It is essentially class-based through the division between our respectable sisters and mothers and poor and sexually loose women. Many middle class feminists and critics sine the 1990s have been trying to question patriarchal violence with the nationalist perspective by paying attention to women's voices and experiences. The main characteristics of novels based on a feminist perspective are that the narrator is a woman in the sex trade and their focuses are on patriarchal violence of Korean men not only violence of GIs and U.S. and on the women's daily life and psychology. In spite of their proper focus on the women's subjectivity, it assumes a form of resilient resistance. Also it has some common with a nationalist perspective in intentional enlightenment and othered understanding of other class. The autobiographies and essay of the women themselves could be categorized into the politics of possibility in that they describe the women's own voices and experiences. This perspective shares one commonality with a feminist perspective that it values the women's experience. However there are no signs of othered disdain, pity, exaggeration of suffering and violence and overemphasis on intentional resistance and subjectivity. They give some possibilities on diverse realities for example by telling women's sexual behavior from unconscious humanism(Wanseo Pak) and depicting an American solder as thrustful(Sojin Kim).
In regards to the subjectivity and resistance of the underprivileged, I question a deep presumption on resistance that the voice of the underprivileged should be listened and only breaking silences is an emancipatory action. I suggest the domestication of suffering as a way of resistance of the underprivileged, which means violence and suffering inflicted have not been evaded and resisted but readily domesticated. The concept is based on the two presumptions: we need to look at the way and reoccupation of the experience of violence and suffering since the experiences seep into everyday lives rather than dramatically being expelled outside. Suffering is not always something negative but could be a creative and redemptive power only when is willingly recognized and endured. For this, I exemplify Wanseo Pak's "Stolen Poverty" where the female protagonist survives and resists poverty considering it as a vocation, and Amerasian Elizabeth Kim's "Ten Thousands Sorrow," where her mother willingly takes social stigma and confronts the cruel realit
