영국 뉴몰든 코리아 타운 내 남한이주민과 북한난민 간의 관계와 상호인식 = Social Relations and Attitudes between South Korean Migrants and North Korean Refugees in the Korea Town, New Malden, U.K

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study defines the Korean Town in New Malden, UK, as one of the “Korean Diasporas` transnational contact zones” in which South Korean immigrants and North Korean refugees interact with each other. It investigates social relations and perceptions of each other between the two groups. New Malden is the only Korea Town in Europe and a social space that has been formed by transnational migrations of three Korean groups: South Korean migrants, Korean Chinese migrants and North Korean refugees. These three groups have migrated to UK in different time period and occupy different social locations. However, they actively interact with each other as members of “ethnic economy.” This study focuses on the relations between South Korean migrants and North Korean refugees who have different backgrounds and resources, and analyzes1) the characteristics of their social relations and perceptions of each other and 2) factors that influence on such characteristics. This study is meaningful in two senses. First, it is the first attempt to examine the impacts of transnational migrations of various Korean groups on the existing Korea Town especially by introducing North Korean refugees as one of the main actors. Second, it can be served as important data for a larger comparative study that analyzes how the “space factor” influences different results of contact between South and North Koreans, that in turn has implications for social integration of the two Koreas.
