스포츠사회학 학술지와 관련 분야 학술지의 Impact Factor 비교 = A Comparison between the Journal Impact Factor of the Sociology of Sport and the Journal Impact Factors of the Related Disciplines

Centered around many biophysical science fields, diverse academic disciplines have verified their institutionalized scholarly standings. However, little attempts have been made in the field of sport sociology. This study adopted the impact factor of the SCI/SCIE/SSCI lists, and compared different peer-reviewed journals of sport sociology to those of the related fields including sport/exercise studies, sociology, and sociology-related social sciences.
The present study employed a secondary data-analysis utilizing the existing data sources from the Thompson Scientific. Then, descriptive analyses were computed to analyze the collected data.
As a result, the SSJ and the JSSI, considered the two prominent sport sociology journals, carried impact factors of .7 and .8, respectively. Those impact factors were lower than the aggregate impact factor of the sport/exercise science category (1.17) as well as sociology/sociology-related social sciences (.8). Only two sport sociology journals were found from the SCIE and SSCI lists. This might provide valuable lessons to scholars in the field of sport sociology. Further, given the fact that neither Korean sport/exercise science journal nor Korean sport sociology journal was included in the SCI/SCIE/SSCI lists, the Korean scholars should take that as constructive feedbacks. The results of this study should not be interpreted from the arithmetic standpoint; it, however, should be interpreted in terms of how journals of sport sociology can be more valuable and competitive under its unique circumstance. In conclusion, this study provides implications as to an appropriate understanding of the impact factor with all the concerns and considerations taken into account.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

자연과학 분야를 중심으로, 다양한 학문 분야들이 학술적 위치에 관한 계량적 측정을 시도해오고 있지만, 스포츠사회학에서는 그에 관한 시도가 없었다. SCI/SCIE와 SSCI의 Impact factor는 학술지가 어떠한 학술적 위치를 지니는가에 관한 정보를 제공한다. 따라서 본 연구는 스포츠사회학 학술지들의 수준은 어떠한지, 또한 체육학, 사회학, 그리고 사회학 관련 학술지들과 어떤 차이를 보이는지를 Impact factor의 비교를 통해 간접 확인하였다. 본 연구는 Thompson Scientific에서 산정하는 Impact factor에 관한 보고를 2차자료수집법을 사용하여 자료를 수집하였으며, 수집된 자료를 기술적분석법을 통해 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 스포츠사회학 학술지인 SSJ와 JSSI의 Impact factor는 .7-.8 수준으로 체육학 전체의 평균(1.17)에 미치지 못했으며, 또한, 사회학/사회학 관련 학술지들의 평균(.8)보다 낮은 수준을 보여준다. 단 2종의 스포츠사회학 학술지(SSJ & JSSI)와 한국 발행 체육학 학술지가 없다는 것은 스포츠사회학과 한국의 스포츠사회학이 앞으로 노력을 해야 할 하나의 방향으로서 제시된다. 본 연구는 Impact factor의 비교를 통한 스포츠사회학의 산술적인 평가에 보다는, Impact factor의 문제를 충분히 고려해서, 스포츠사회학 학술지의 발전적 방향을 제언한다.
