공동체의 규모와 자치 인식 = Community Size and the Perception of Self-Government

This article examines the relationship between community size and self-government. The article hypothesizes that residents who live in small-scale community where the managerial and pragmatic politics is remarkable are likely to strongly appreciate self-government. In the small-scale community, compared to the large-scale community, residents are more likely to take on a bigger role and align their interests with those of the community. Residents as problem solvers who live in the small-scale community are more likely to strongly recognize a need of self-government. In order to test the hypothesis, the article conducts the 7th local election survey. Empirical findings show that residents who live in small-scale community are more likely to support decentralization, the importance of local issues, and the importance of local representation. The article discusses the influence of self-government that is operated in each part of nation on both the consolidation of Korean democracy and balanced national development.
